Whether you are a church with years of recorded sermons, a government entity with archives of meeting recordings, or a family with a collection of precious interviews of family members, we can transfer your (non-copyright) standard audio cassettes^1,2to the latest digital formats and media at very reasonable prices.

Old audio cassettes will not last forever, and with cassette players becoming scarce, those recordings are becoming less accessible every year.

Once converted to digital form, your recordings can be archived to a hard disc drive, jump drive, CD/DVD or other digital storage device. They can be compressed to MP3, WMA or other common formats for use on the internet or to share though e-mail. The first step is getting the audio off those old tapes.

Sure, there are do-it-yourself products out there, but do you really want to spend days, weeks or months transferring tapes working all day at a typical rate of four to five 90-minute tapes per day? Access Video can transfer your tapes quickly and at higher quality than can typically be accomplished with consumer-grade hardware and software.

PROCESS/OPTIONS: We capture both sides of the entire tape into two digital WAV files – one for Side A and one for Side B. At this point, the content is not edited and there may be significant silent portions, usually before and after the actual recordings. Access Video will, optionally, edit these files to remove silence at the beginning and end. Other audio editing is also available (at additional cost), for example, to remove large gaps in the recording or to break the recording into smaller files, such as for individual tracks on a CD. Finally, the audio content is recorded either to a CD or DVD (for computer use), or optionally to a customer-provided external hard drive or flash/jump drive.

MULTIPLE TAPES: In order to uniquely identify the files associated with each cassette for customers with multiple tapes, Access Video will either use information from the cassette label in the audio file name or number the cassettes and use matching numbers in the file names.

DISC LABELING: If files are transferred to CD/DVD, the disc will be permanently labeled with the content information. Because stick-on labels can crack and peel over time (potentially rendering the disc unusable) we use a professional thermal transfer process to print a durable and waterproof image directly to the disc.

TECHNICAL DETAILS: Access Video will transfer your cassettes to uncompressed digital WAV files using professional tape transport and digitizing equipment. Each side of the tape is captured as a 22-KHz, 16-bit stereo file, which can be optionally up-scaled to 44.1 KHz. These are large files, but avoiding compression in the initial conversion allows higher audio fidelity.

² This service and pricing applies only to full-sized standard Compact Cassette audio tapes in normal operating condition, recorded at the standard 1 7/8 inches per second speed and in a standard configuration – that is, either stereo or monophonic with Side A recorded in one direction and Side B recorded in the opposite direction. Other types of audio cassettes (e.g. mini-cassettes & microcassettes), other speeds (e.g., 15/16 ips) and other configurations (e.g., four-track recordings) MAY be able to be transferred but pricing, options and availability may be significantly different from this offering. Broken tapes or tapes in poor condition may not be able to be transferred at all or may require repairs at significant additional cost. Please contact us for details.

³ Acceptable customer-supplied media include:

External Hard Disk Drive (Firewire or Hi-speed USB) in PC compatible format (NTSF or FAT32)

Solid State Media such as a USB Jump/Flash Drive (FAT-32 format)

Note: 44K digital audio requires 1 GB of free space per C-90 tape or proportional for other size tapes.

Customer supplied media must be provided to Access Video at time of order. (We cannot usually transfer at time of pickup.)

⁴ When output to CD is selected each 30-minute or 60-minute tape will go to one CD. Each 90-minute or 120-minute tape will go to either one CD (if the actual content is under the maximum CD length of 80 minutes) or two CDs with one tape side per CD (if the content is over 80 minutes). Note: Customers may specify recording to a DATA CD (WAV files) or to a conventional AUDIO CD. DATA CD’s are recommended for critical archiving & reliability (but will only play in computers), while AUDIO CD’s are recommended for convenience & flexible usage. For DATA CD’s the maximum recorded time per CD is limited to approximately 70 minutes (because DATA CDs include error detection & correction for increased reliability over time).

⁵ Data DVDs will only play in a computer. Each Data DVD can hold up to approximately seven hours of uncompressed audio. For example, the audio from about seven near-full C-60 tapes can be provided on one data DVD. When output to DVD is selected, as many tapes as possible will be included on each DVD. The total number of DVD’s will vary depending on the lengths of the individual tapes.

⁶ Prices on these rows are only for C-90 or C120 tapes that contain less than 80 minutes of actual content (or 70 minutes for Data CDs) after trimming the silent portions at the beginning and end - so that only one CD is required.
